At Bibb Medical Center, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program is more than just a
stepping stone into the healthcare field; it’s a hands-on, high-impact experience led by one of BMC’s most experienced and compassionate instructors, Barbara Terry.
Barbara has been in nursing for over 42 years and has been part of the BMC family since 1997. With experience across the hospital floor, emergency room, and nursing home, she brings a deep understanding of patient care and an even deeper respect for the role of nursing assistants.

“People may not realize it, but CNAs often spend more time with residents than the nurses do,” Barbara explains. “They are the ones who notice the small changes, who provide the daily care, and who build strong relationships with the residents. Nurses rely on CNAs not just for their support, but for their insight.”
Barbara began teaching CNA classes at BMC years ago after becoming an ADPH-approved instructor. What started as an occasional course offering has grown into a full program with several classes each year, a testament to both the demand and the heart behind it.
Students in the CNA program can expect a fast-paced, yet supportive learning environment. The class size is small, allowing students and the instructor to build meaningful connections and tailor learning to individual styles. From classroom instruction and lab practice to hands-on training in the nursing home, students are guided every step of the way.
The curriculum is designed to prepare students for real-world caregiving and includes topics such as Resident Rights and HIPAA, infection control, CPR, safety, vital signs, patient transfers, and much more. “What I love most is watching students grow,” Barbara says. “When they master the skills and understand the ‘why’ behind them, that’s when I know they’re ready.”
Barbara emphasizes that the program is a great fit for anyone, even those with no prior healthcare experience. “Being a CNA is an entry-level position, but it’s a powerful one. It helps people discover if the medical field is right for them. I always tell my students, even as a nurse, I learned so much from the CNAs who took the time to teach me.”
Beyond the technical skills, Barbara’s main goal is to instill the importance of dignity and compassion. “We’re not just treating a condition. We’re caring for people. It’s so important to remember that every resident deserves to be treated with the same respect and kindness we would want for our own family.”
And the best part? The program is completely free. While CNA training typically costs between $800 and $1,200 elsewhere, students at BMC can complete the course at no cost, and most are offered jobs shortly after passing the State Registry exam.
“The opportunity to gain certification, build skills, and start a healthcare career all without having to travel or pay out of pocket is something truly special for our community,” Barbara says.
Applications for the upcoming CNA class are now open and close on July 25th.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a CNA, don’t wait; this is your chance to take the first step into a meaningful, rewarding career in healthcare.
